NSF C-CHANGE IGERT Program Support

C-CHANGE Fellows are eligible for many opportunities for support and professional development as part of the NSF IGERT program.  Participation in the C-CHANGE program is on an annual basis, renewable for up to five years.  C-CHANGE Fellows are reviewed each spring and funding for the next year is contingent upon successful completion of the C-CHANGE program and timely progress toward the PhD degree in the Fellow’s home department.

  • Funding:  Graduate students accepted into the NSF C-CHANGE IGERT program are eligible for funding for 5 years of graduate study.  A C-CHANGE Fellow’s funding is provided by both the PhD department and the C-CHANGE program, including up to two years of NSF C-CHANGE IGERT funding at $30,000 per year (plus tuition).  Below is a typical funding schedule:
    • Years 1, 4, and 5:  Funding is through the C-CHANGE Fellow’s PhD department or other University of Kansas sources and can be in the form of a Graduate Teaching Assistantship, Graduate Research Assistantship, scholarship, or other funding.
    • Years 2 and 3:  Funding is through the NSF C-CHANGE IGERT program; C-CHANGE Fellows receive $30,000 stipend plus tuition per year for up to two years.

  • Travel and subsistence support for:
    • Fieldwork in Kansas, Mexico, Greenland course research sites
    • Annual C-CHANGE retreats
    • Haskell REU mentorship program
    • Attendance to limited number of professional meetings
    • Science/climate policy internship
  • PhD dissertation research support based on competitive research proposal approval
  • Office space and access to IPSR equipment and resources
  • Opportunity to identify invited speakers & symposia topics
